Which homes suit a heat pump well

The pattern is consistent and it has less to do with property age than people assume.

Which homes are harder

Harder does not mean impossible. It means the survey matters more and the numbers need checking honestly.

What you get

A typical domestic installation comprises the outdoor unit, a hot water cylinder, upgraded radiators where the heat loss calculation requires them, new controls with weather compensation, and the pipework and electrical work to connect it all. Three to five days on site for most homes.

Cost and grant

£8,000 to £14,000 installed for most homes, less for a flat, more for large or period property. After the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in England and Wales, most households pay £1,500 to £6,500 net. Scotland works differently and can be more generous once the interest-free loan is included: see grants by nation.

New build and self build

New builds are generally excluded from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, with narrow exceptions for self-builds. The consolation is that a new build is the easiest possible heat pump property: low heat loss, underfloor heating, correctly sized emitters from day one, and a system that can be designed around a 35°C flow temperature. Running costs on a well-built new home are excellent.

Brands

We install Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Vaillant, Samsung, NIBE, Grant and Worcester Bosch. Recommendations are made on your design flow temperature, the noise position and available space, not on which manufacturer offers the best installer margin.

Common questions

Is my house suitable for an air source heat pump?

Most are, but the honest answer needs a survey. Homes on oil, LPG or electric heating, homes with generously sized radiators and reasonably insulated post-1990 housing are the strongest candidates. Uninsulated solid wall property and combi homes with no cylinder space are harder.

How much does domestic installation cost?

£8,000 to £14,000 for most homes, less for a flat, more for large or period property. After the £7,500 grant in England and Wales, expect a net figure of £1,500 to £6,500.

Can I get a heat pump on a new build?

You can install one, but new builds are generally excluded from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, with narrow exceptions for self-builds. The upside is that new builds are the easiest properties to heat efficiently, so running costs tend to be excellent.

Will a heat pump work in an old house?

Frequently yes, but the survey matters far more. Solid wall property has high heat loss, which means a bigger unit and higher running costs. A good installer will tell you where fabric improvements should come first rather than sizing around the problem.

How long will a heat pump last?

Typically 15 to 20 years, against 10 to 15 for a gas boiler, with annual servicing. Ground loops and boreholes last far longer, commonly quoted at 50 years or more.

What size do I need?

Why sizing comes from a room-by-room heat loss calculation and never from floor area or your old boiler's output.
