Commercial design is a different problem

Domestic heat pump design is mostly fabric heat loss. Commercial design has to handle occupancy gains, equipment loads, ventilation, wildly variable run hours, and frequently a requirement to heat one zone while cooling another. Get it wrong and you either fail to hold temperature or run an enormous electricity bill.

We model the building as it is actually used rather than as the drawings describe it, and present projected running cost alongside capital cost so the business case is visible rather than assumed.

Premises we work in

Funding

Small non-domestic buildings in England and Wales can claim the Boiler Upgrade Scheme on the same basis as homes, which surprises a lot of business owners. Larger schemes generally look instead at capital allowances, the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme where applicable, and the operational case against rising gas costs and carbon reporting obligations. Scotland has its own non-domestic support routes.

Electrical supply is the usual constraint

On commercial projects the incoming supply, not the heating design, is most often what changes the scheme. We check capacity early and engage the DNO where an upgrade is needed, because a supply upgrade can add months to a programme if it is discovered late.

Phasing

Most commercial buildings cannot shut down for an installation. We phase by zone, work out of hours where needed, and keep existing heating live until the new system is commissioned and proven. For care homes and schools that sequencing is the job, not a courtesy.

Maintenance

Commercial systems need planned maintenance to hold efficiency and satisfy warranty and F-Gas record-keeping obligations. Contracts cover scheduled servicing, performance logging and priority response.

Common questions

Can businesses get a heat pump grant?

Small non-domestic properties in England and Wales can claim the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, worth £7,500 towards an air source or ground source heat pump, on the same basis as homes. Larger schemes usually look at capital allowances and sector-specific decarbonisation funding instead.

How is a commercial heat pump sized?

From a full building load model covering fabric, occupancy, equipment gains, ventilation and real operating hours, never a floor-area rule of thumb. The incoming electrical supply is checked early, because that is the constraint that most often changes a commercial design.

Can you install without closing the building?

Yes. We phase installations by zone, work out of hours where the building requires it, and keep existing heating live until the new system is commissioned and proven.

Do commercial heat pumps need servicing?

Yes, on a planned schedule. It maintains efficiency, satisfies warranty terms and covers F-Gas record-keeping obligations. Contracts include performance logging and priority breakdown response.

What size do I need?

Why sizing comes from a room-by-room heat loss calculation and never from floor area or your old boiler's output.
