The installation process

Survey, design, grant, installation, commissioning. What happens at each stage, how long it takes and how disruptive it really is.

Tell us about your property and an MCS-certified engineer will be in touch, usually the same working day.

No obligation. We only use your details to respond to your enquiry.

Stage 1: Free survey and heat loss calculation

An engineer measures every room, assesses wall and roof construction, checks your existing radiators and pipework, identifies where an outdoor unit could go and where a cylinder could live, and checks the electrical supply. One to two hours, no charge, no obligation.

This produces a room-by-room heat loss calculation. Everything downstream depends on it. If an installer skips this stage, nothing they tell you afterwards is reliable.

Stage 2: Design and fixed quote

We set a design flow temperature, size the unit against the calculated load, determine which radiators need upsizing, size the cylinder against your household, and run the noise assessment for the proposed unit position. You get a written specification and a fixed price showing gross, grant and net. Two to five working days after the survey.

Stage 3: Grant application

This differs by nation and the difference matters.

England and Wales. We apply to Ofgem for a Boiler Upgrade Scheme voucher on your behalf. You do almost nothing. The grant is deducted from your invoice and we redeem the voucher after commissioning.

Scotland. You apply to Home Energy Scotland, not us, and you must apply and be approved before any work begins. Starting work first forfeits the funding entirely. We will tell you exactly what is needed, but the application is yours to make and the timeline is longer.

Allow one to two weeks in England and Wales, and longer in Scotland.

Stage 4: Installation

Typically three to five working days:

A straightforward job on a modern property with adequate radiators can finish in two days. A large period property with extensive pipework and eight radiator changes can run past a week.

Stage 5: Commissioning and handover

The stage most often rushed, and the one that determines whether you are happy. Setting the weather compensation curve properly is what lets the system run at a low flow temperature and therefore cheaply. We then spend time showing you how the controls work, because a heat pump that nobody understands gets turned up to 55°C in the first cold snap and never comes back down.

How disruptive is it?

More than a boiler swap, considerably less than a kitchen. Expect floorboards up along pipework routes, dust from core drilling the external wall, and one to two days without heating and hot water during the changeover. We agree that window with you in advance and avoid the depths of winter where we can.

Afterwards

You receive your MCS certificate, manufacturer warranty registration and grant paperwork. Heat pumps should be serviced annually to hold efficiency and keep the warranty valid. Budget £150 to £250 a year.

Common questions

How long does air source heat pump installation take?

Three to five working days on site for most homes, two for a straightforward swap with adequate radiators, and a week or more for large period properties. End to end from survey to commissioning, allow four to eight weeks in England and Wales, longer in Scotland because of the grant process.

What happens during a heat pump installation?

Day one covers the outdoor unit and pipework route. Days two and three cover the cylinder, internal pipework and radiator changes. The final day is electrical connection, filling, commissioning and handover, with the weather compensation curve set properly.

How disruptive is it?

More than a boiler swap, much less than a kitchen. Floorboards up along pipework routes, dust from core drilling, and one to two days without heating and hot water during the changeover, agreed with you in advance.

What are the requirements for installation?

A position outside for the unit that passes the MCS 020(a) noise assessment, space inside for a hot water cylinder, an adequate electrical supply, and emitters capable of heating each room at the design flow temperature. All four are established at survey.

Do I need to be home during installation?

For access, yes, on most days. The commissioning and handover day matters most, because that is when you learn how to run the system, and getting that wrong is expensive over fifteen years.

What size do I need?

Why sizing comes from a room-by-room heat loss calculation and never from floor area or your old boiler's output.
